Who We Are

WHO WE ARE

#ImAfricanBornIn arose out of the work of Valuing Black Lives 2016: The Second Annual Global Emotional Emancipation Summit. Held in Washington, D.C., in September 2016, the Summit was sponsored by Community Healing Network (CHN) and the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi), in conjunction with the 46th Annual Legislative Conference of the United States Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, and hosted by Representative Karen Bass (D-CA).

Panelists and participants from across the Diaspora came together to continue developing a unified global response to the challenges facing Black people. Our objectives were to share ideas for dismantling the anti-Black narrative, and to agree on one action we could take together toward that end across the Diaspora in 2017.

A majority of Summit panelists and participants voted for the idea offered by Kara Poole: #ImAfricanBornIn as a first step in working together to rewrite the narrative. A 2017 Global Action Task Force was established, and it developed this initiative.
